There are various methods and products that allow you to open your gate and it's not secret that deciding which is best for you can be confusing or even frustrating. With so many options like telephone entry systems, proximity readers, keypads, transmitters (remotes), and more, it can take a long time to figure out not only which one is best for you, but also how to use it.
The Two most common Access Control methods:
While there are numerous ways of ensuring access control at home, your business, or anywhere else you want to control the flow of traffic, the two most stand-out options tend to be either Keypads or Transmitters (typically in the form of a 1-3 button remote). This is due to a number of reasons such as convenience, quick set up, visual appeal, or inclusion with other access control methods like a gate or garage door opener. They are both equally fantastic options for Access Control and you wouldn't be making a mistake by choosing one over another as it really does come down to personal preference and need.
Access Control Keypads:
Access control keypads allow you to set multiple codes to a single gate or door. These are popular for multi-home units and apartment buildings, where many people would need unique codes for the same gate. Keypads are helpful for people who tend to or fear misplacing things, particularly their keys. However, many keypads offer the option of purchasing a key for the unit. Some access control pads are solar-friendly and function as solar gate operators.

Transmitters:
Transmitters are a bit more straightforward. Essentially a garage door opener, the transmitter goes wherever you go, making it easily accessible. Transmitters can be multi-channeled, typically up to 5 channels or gates. These are better suited for residential homes and gated communities as they can be stored in the visor of a car for immediate access. However, access control keypads are a better choice if purchasing for an apartment complex or similar.
Shop TransmittersOther Access Control methods:
Part of why Transmitters and Keypads are so popular is that they are highly accessible, simple methods of entry that most people are familiar with, thus why they are so common in simple apartment complexes and residential areas. However for commercial, industrial, or on occasion even private properties use access control methods like Telephone Entry Systems, Intercoms, Push Buttons, Key Switches, and Card Readers. These methods can be a little more complex, however they often offer more advanced features like higher code limits, audio and video communications, guest access, and more. Let's take a quick look at what makes these methods great:
Key Switches & Push Buttons:
Key Switches are typically small boxes that serve to open and close gates or, much more commonly, overhead (garage) doors. Just turn the key and your door should automatically open or close unless the key is removed or, on some models, an emergency stop button is pushed to stop the gate from moving. Key Switches are often used for places like warehouses and manned entry points, primarily as a simple and secure way to make sure nothing accidentally opens or closes while loading trucks or lifts. Similarly, Push Button Stations operate almost identically, just without the added security of a key to complete the electrical circuit to let it open and close.

Telephone Entry Systems & Intercoms:
On different sides of the same coin, Telephone Entry Systems and Intercoms are both great ways of keeping your facility safe whether it's an apartment building or high-security area. Telephone Entry Systems are most commonly found within indoor spaces such as office buildings and apartments, allowing tenants and employees to easily communicate with guests, letting them enter without needing to go all the way to the front entrance. Similarly, Intercoms are great for outdoor spaces such as front gates or indoor spaces that require a more direct line. These are typically used for office building, warehouses, and generally high-security areas that don't want visitors near the facility without communicating their credentials first. Both of these systems allow for safe, secure lines between your facility and visitors.

Card Readers & Key Cards:
Great for almost any facility, Card Readers when paired with key cards are some of the most used and convenient options for access control today. Easily programmed and used by a simple pass or swipe over a card reader and your entryway is unlocked, allowing guests, employees, or residents into your facility instantly. While not recommended for high-security areas, card readers are an excellent option for places like apartment buildings, offices, restricted access areas, and more. Additionally, part of what makes these so great is that key cards are relatively cheap, especially when purchased in bulk, making them a cost-effective solution for access control.
